A coastal adventure.

Greetings Blog World.  Little Fox and Sandy here today.  We are taking advantage of our unseasonably warm weather this weekend and decided to head to the beach. 

Destination: Waldport.

Little Fox was telling me that many of these bridges up and down the Oregon Coast were designed by Conde McCullough .  

McCullough believed bridges could be built economically but still have beauty.  Most of the major bridges up and down HWY 101 in Oregon were designed by him.  Signatures of his work include: Art Deco obelisks, Gothic Spires etc.

The original Alsea Bay Bridge was decommissioned in 1991 after the new one was built however they kept the decorative pieces. 

Some of his more striking work include the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

Speaking of Yaquina Bay, it's an area of the beach with many commercial fisherpeople (is that correct)?

Anyway, Little Fox and I found this boat that was selling Tuna and Salmon straight from the boat.

Time to explore. 

 

Alaska post 3 - Yipee! I'm at Denali National Park

Goodbye Talkneeta, hello Denali National Park.  I made it to the National Park today.   

After sitting in the car for a few hours decided to take a quick hike.  Looks like I found evidence of beavers.  

Yep, a beaver dam at Horsehoe Lake.  I didn't see any beavers but they were probably too busy working to say hi.

Denali is the only National Park with a working dogsled team.  They don't race the animals but they are used during the winter for taking rangers to cabins in the park to do repairs, break trails for other dog sled teams, and act as ambassadors of goodwill. 

Our next day in Denali involved a bus ride.  The first 15 miles of the park road is open to everyone, the other 65 miles or so is only open to busses, walking, and bikes. 

Being short on time we didn't hike the road or bike it for that matter but took a wilderness tour.  Saw lots of tundra, wilderness and a few animals (brown bear, moose, arctic ground squirrels). 

Mother nature cooperated with us and gave us some rain in the night but it cleared a lot of the smoke from the air.  Got one more hike in Denali at Savage River. 

Not a lot between Denali and Fairbanks (our next stop) but we did find this nice little roadhouse.  Big salads and homemade beer (I recommend the hefeweizen). 

Yipee!  Made it to Fairbanks and checked in with the locals at the hotel.  

They recommended hitting the salmon bake for dinner.  Who can argue with that???

Yep, this is a salad, the salmon was scarfed down before the roommates had a chance to take pictures.

Hi Blog Pals,
I just wanted to wish everyone a happy spring.

Today's adventure includes a trip to Dry Creek Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.
Dry Creek Falls is the watershed for the small town of Cascade Locks.  I hope there is water as I want my friends in Cascade Locks to have lots of fresh water.  Enough talk, let's hike.

As I am approaching the falls the river looks like it's flowing well.

Do you see the waterfall in the background?  Let me get closer....

I am no hydrologist but this waterfall sure looks good to me.  I think my friends are going to have lots of water this year. 

Who are my friends in Cascade Locks?   Of course we have the Native American's who sell smoked salmon and fresh salmon (in season) under the bridge out of the back of their pickups.

There is also the Brigham Fish Market.  They have all sorts of fish, some local.  I recommend the smoked salmon at either place.

Wild smoked salmon.....worth every penny.

One more place I recommend in Cascade Locks.  

I have never had the burgers but the ice cream is pretty darn good.

Garden Tour w/ LFox.

Hiya everyone.
Happy Thursday.  This post is way behind (the day of writing is July 4th) but do to sekrebeary issues it's posted super late.

The garden is in great shape.  Remember the strawberry planter Baxter made a few weeks ago?  The plants have produced about 5 total berries this year., keep your paws crossed for a better haul next year.

Basil is looking great.  Who wants pesto?

I even have a few tomatoes getting ready to turn red.

The red pepper is still green and has some weird brown growth. I better keep an eye on this one.

Plums anyone? 

I am trying my hand at smoking some salmon. I hope it comes out well.

145 degrees is the perfect temperature.

Time to wait and relax till my salmon is done. Oh, here's some fresh sangria.Is this for me?

Recipe #2 - Ajdin's Salmon

Hello Blog Pals,
It's time for another recipe from my recipe contest.  Today, I am featuring Ajdin's salmon. Ajdin has the coolest toys, here he is showing off his salmon puzzle, I hope his recipe isn't too puzzling.

Enough chit chat.  Let's get to work. 

Step 1:  Get salmon and defrost it. 

Step 2: Begin organizing the ingridients.  Lemon juice (what not fresh, ugh humans).  Oyster Sauce for a little saltiness.

Don't forget the garlic powder and lemon pepper. 

Voila.  A little of this, a little of that and mix it all together. 

Preheat oven to 375.  Layer a cookie sheet with tin foil, place salmon on foil.  Spread the sauce over the salmon.  

Well, it's baked but I think it needs a nice side of rice.

Salmon - Huckleberry Wilderness

Rumor has it that every bear loves salmon.  Most foxes love chicken but it’s a little known fact that some foxes (i.e. me) love huckleberries, salmon, and chicken.

Now, on an unrelated note I should mention that it’s getting time for my roommates mid-year review.   My roommates are trying to improve their score from last time so they can get their raise.  I wonder what they will do to try to persuade me. 

Looks like they are going to take me for a hike.  Not a bad way to try and build some goodwill on their evaluation but not too creative if you ask me. 

Who knew this place existed?  Is it real?  Salmon and Huckleberries, I think this is going to be a great day for a little fox.

The trail looks well maintained as well.

Lots of huckleberry bushes.  I know huckleberries are found in the Northwest.  Oregon has lots of them, same with Washington and I know Western Montana is abundant with them.  I imagine they are in BC as well.   Sadly, the berries are gone but the plants look great so I am sure next year the crop will be abundant.

Now, let’s talk about the salmon.  The river is a little low and I don’t see a whole lot of salmon, I wonder what is going on?

As we continued on the hike eventually we made it to the viewpoint where we got to have lunch.  

Sequoia is enjoying the view as well.

As we head back down the trail I will be sure to keep my eye open for some salmon and any huckleberries.
