Little Fox Archaeologist

Hello Gang,
Little Fox, here.  I have donned my archaeologist attire today for a little hike.  This adventure is taking on the Weldon Wagon Road.  The road was constructed during the apple boom of the Columbia Gorge around 1900.  Apparently, apples were big business and growers were growing on remote land, often very difficult to get to (and get product to town).  Before the road the apple growers used to drive their fruit down to town on sleighs.

The road is pretty narrow in spots.  They used the road for about 10 years then the apple boom was over.  The trees here are the Oregon White Oak.  Interestingly, we are in Washington State.   These trees are home to Bald Eagles and the Washington Grey Squirrel.

Nice and wide open landscape.

Sequoia is along for the hike today.

I wish there were still apples here, this fox is hungry.

Apparnetly, this little piece of land I am on is a part of a national recreation area.

Sequoia wanted to share his footprint.
At the end of the trail there is a whole bunch of old farm equipment.

Not sure if it's from the apple boom.  Perhaps that's another adventure for another day.

The guidebook I used for this hike recommended visiting the Indian Cemetary near the trail head. These tombstones are the Chief and his family.  The Chief lived for 108 years. Not a shabby feat.

Lot's of the tombstones were nicely decorated, this cemetery has a good caretaker.
